Keep Originals western boots: suede, a mid heel and a slip-on fit
A western boot is the boot with a tapered toe, a shaft shaped around the calf and a heel angled inwards: it began as a riding shoe, where the narrow toe slid into the stirrup and the heel kept it from sliding out. Away from the context it comes from, it remains a shoe with real volume, one that carries straight jeans, a long skirt and a short dress without needing anything else. The upper is suede, leather finished on the flesh side rather than the grain side: the short nap that results leaves the surface matt and velvety, visually warmer than smooth leather and more sensitive to water. Here the suede carries a vintage treatment that lightens the raised areas and leaves the hollows darker, so the surface starts out already lived in: the creases and marks that come with wear add to a pattern that is already there instead of opening up tidemarks on an even ground. Clean it dry, brushing with the nap using a soft or rubber brush, and never polish it with smooth-leather products.
The closure is slip-on: no side zip and no laces, you pull it on and slide out without undoing anything. That is why a western boot wants half a size more leeway than a lace-up shoe, which you adjust by tightening. The heel is mid-height, between 4.5 and 6 centimetres, and it is the wide squared western heel rather than the slim profile of a stiletto: at the same height, a broader base rests the load over a larger surface, and you feel the difference after the first hour on your feet. Inside, the insole is leather, which absorbs the day's moisture and over time takes the print of the foot.
Against a smooth-leather boot, a suede western boot asks for less upkeep and no less care: no polish, no cloth, but no driving rain or radiator-drying either.
