What changes in a spring summer shoe?
Three things, and none of them is the colour: the lining shrinks or disappears, the sole becomes thinner and more flexible, and the upper opens up — with straps, cut-outs, perforations or a lacing that lets the foot breathe. Those are the same three things that separate a sandal from an ankle boot on the same heel.
The open shapes differ in how they hold the foot. A sandal has one or more straps and fastens with a buckle or an ankle strap; a flip-flop passes between the big toe and the second one and has no other hold; a slide has a single band across the forefoot; a mule is closed at the front and open at the heel. Alongside them sit the light closed shapes — ballet flats, loafers, slip-ons and sneakers — and, for occasions, court shoes, slingbacks and mary janes.
In summer the materials matter more than in winter, because the shoe is often worn without a sock. Smooth leather and patent leather clean up with a damp cloth. Suede should be brushed dry and treated with a water repellent before you first wear it: water and sand mark it quickly. Woven straw and raffia must not get wet or sit in direct sun for long, because they lose their shape. Textile and nylon wash by hand in cold water. On sizing there is a practical rule: a sandal with an adjustable strap forgives half a size, a closed shoe does not.
