Suede and leather insole: how Rahya Grey shoes are built
Suede is leather worked on the flesh side, the same material Italian labels call camoscio: the velvety surface comes from buffing the fibre itself, not from an added coating. On this page it is the upper material of every available model, both on the all-leather versions and on those that pair suede with a fabric insert. Clean it dry, with a stiff-bristle brush always worked in the same direction; if it gets wet, let it dry on its own, away from radiators and hairdryers, because direct heat hardens the fibre and flattens the nap.
A leather insole runs through every model in this selection, and it is the detail you keep noticing longest. Leather absorbs moisture through the day and releases it while the shoe rests, so alternating two pairs instead of wearing the same one every day extends the life of both. Over the first few weeks the footbed takes the shape of the wearer's arch, which is why a shoe with a leather insole fits differently after a month than it did on day one.
Heel height runs from 5 to 8 centimetres and splits into two different behaviours. The mid-heel models hold the foot at a contained angle and carry through a full day; the tallest version puts that height on a wedge, which meets the ground across its whole surface instead of a single point and cuts the pressure on the forefoot. At the same number of centimetres a wedge is steadier than a slim heel, which is why eight centimetres here weigh less than the figure suggests.
On the lace-up wedge the sole is built on a leather welt: a strip stitched around the perimeter that joins the upper to the bottom. It is the construction that lets the shoe be resoled once the bottom wears out, without touching the upper, and it moves the pair out of the seasonal-purchase category and into the one you keep.
