Compared to a single strap, it holds the foot more securely and draws a vertical line that visually lengthens the instep. Here the horizontal strip is in cognac suede, matching the vamp, and fastens on the outer side with a rectangular silver-tone metal buckle. The vertical strip is in smooth dark brown leather and ends above the toe with a fringe. The fringe, also known as a kiltie, is a tongue cut into tabs, borrowed from golf shoes, where it protected the laces from mud. Here it's a decorative element: five pointed tabs, each with a hole, fanned open over the vamp. Suede is leather buffed on the flesh side, meaning the inner side: it has a longer nap than nubuck and a soft, matte surface, which makes the smooth leather of the fringe stand out by contrast. A row of decorative perforations (brogue detailing) in two alternating sizes runs along the entire edge of the collar, stitched in plain view. The spool heel narrows at the center and widens toward the sole and the ground: at 5.5 cm it raises the heel while keeping a wider base of support than a slim heel. Inside, the lining is in black leather and the insole is in padded leather, with the brand and the words Made in Italy stamped on it. The sole is in leather, with a rubber insert under the forefoot. The leather sole lets the foot breathe, while the rubber provides grip where pressure is concentrated. Suede is more sensitive to water than smooth leather: it's best to treat it with a waterproofing spray before first use and brush it dry to keep the nap even.
